Bornean Ferret-Badger

A small, slender mustelid with a ferret-badger's elongated body and facial mask, endemic to the Kinabalu-Crocker-Trusmadi montane complex in north-western Sabah — likely the smallest range of any carnivore in Southeast Asia, and absent from other apparently suitable Bornean uplands. A 2026 study recorded it between 744m and 2,459m elevation, though at least one older record exists from the Kinabatangan floodplain lowlands, so 'restricted to the mountains' should be treated as the general rule rather than an absolute one.

The same 2026 study found consistently high occupancy in both primary forest and selectively logged or regenerating agricultural land — locally adaptable despite its extremely narrow overall range. Confirmed field observations remain scarce, and its diet, gestation and litter size have not been documented. Endangered (IUCN), primarily because of that small range.
