The largest of the true tits, striking in glossy black plumage with a bright yellow crest and underparts, usually seen moving with mixed-species flocks through the forest mid-storey and canopy.
Feeds mainly on insects gleaned from bark and foliage, with occasional fruit, and its loud, ringing calls often reveal a flock's presence before it comes into view.
