A large-eared, tailless bat named for a supposed resemblance to true vampire bats, though it does not feed on blood — instead an active predator of insects and small vertebrates including frogs, lizards and even other bats.
Roosts in caves, hollow trees and buildings, often in small groups, and hunts by a combination of echolocation and acute hearing, often gleaning prey directly from surfaces rather than only catching it in flight.
