One of the most recently described Bornean rodents, formally recognised as a distinct species only within the last decade and known from hill and montane forest in Sabah.
Presumed terrestrial and nocturnal like other Maxomys spiny rats, foraging on the forest floor for fruit, seeds and invertebrates, but detailed field data remains very limited given how recently it was described.
