A Bornean-endemic member of the spiny rat group, named for the stiff, bristly hairs mixed through its coat, restricted to cool montane forest such as that on Kinabalu.
Terrestrial and largely nocturnal, foraging on the forest floor for fruit, seeds and invertebrates. One of relatively few Bornean rodents confined to high-elevation habitat.
