The largest of Borneo's three otter species, with a more rounded head, notably smooth, sleek fur (rather than the coarser guard hairs of other otters), a flattened tail, and — the clearest nose-based field mark against the hairy-nosed otter — a bare, distorted-diamond-shaped nose pad rather than a hair-covered one. Found along larger rivers and coastal wetlands.

Highly social, living and hunting in family groups that cooperatively fish, and often the most visible otter species on a Kinabatangan river cruise, sometimes hauling out onto banks or logs in the early morning. Pups' eyes open around one month, and they are swimming by two months old.
