A munia with a dark chestnut-brown head and upperparts sharply demarcated from a clean white belly, found at forest edge, scrub and grassy clearings.
Travels in small, active flocks, feeding on grass and weed seeds low in vegetation, and is somewhat less tied to open cultivation than its more common relatives.
