A fanged frog whose species name references an unusual and well-documented parental care behaviour: males of this species carry developing tadpoles on their backs, transporting them between pools — a striking example of paternal care rare among frogs.
Found near forest streams, males carrying the bony jaw projections typical of fanged frogs for combat as well as tadpoles for transport; feeds on invertebrates at the water's edge.
