A fanged frog — males of this genus carry bony, fang-like projections on the lower jaw, used in wrestling matches with rival males over territory and mates. 'Guardian' in the common name reflects parental care behaviour documented in several related species.

Found near forest streams, males calling from the water's edge or shallow water at night; feeds on invertebrates and, opportunistically, smaller frogs.
