A large, heavily spined rodent with long black-and-white banded quills covering the body and a crest of longer bristles on the head and neck, used defensively by backing toward a threat and raising the quills.
Nocturnal and terrestrial, digging for roots and tubers as well as fallen fruit. Distinctive quills left on forest trails are often the first sign of its presence, well before any direct sighting.
