A small, shrew-like relative of the moonrat, with soft fur (rather than the spines of a true hedgehog), a long pointed snout and only a short stub of a tail — the feature behind its name.
Terrestrial and, unusually for a small insectivorous mammal, often active by day as well as at night, foraging through leaf litter for invertebrates. Most frequently recorded at higher elevations, including around Kinabalu Park.
