Named for a partial pale 'collar' marking around the neck (semitorquata means 'half-collared') — the key visual difference from the short-tailed mongoose, which has a plain neck and a black chin spot instead. Beyond this one field mark, this is genuinely one of the least-documented small carnivores in Borneo: I could not find verified measurements, activity-pattern data or dietary records for this species in the available literature, and none should be assumed.
Camera-trap images (for example from Deramakot Forest Reserve) confirm its presence but reveal little about its behaviour. Near Threatened (IUCN, assessed 2015). Treat any sighting report with appropriate caution pending better documentation.
