Closely related to the Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike but with more extensive black plumage and lacking obvious wingbars, favouring the interior of lowland and hill forest rather than open edge habitats.
Forages actively for insects in the mid-storey, frequently joining mixed-species flocks and betraying its presence with sharp, high-pitched calls.
