A stocky, short-tailed woodpecker with grey and buff barred plumage and a short crest, males showing a red patch on the head, favouring the mid-storey of lowland and hill forest.
Feeds by tapping and gleaning ants and beetle larvae from small dead branches and vine tangles, usually seen singly or in pairs joining mixed foraging flocks.
