A striking forest trogon, males with a black head, red breast and finely barred wings, sitting upright and motionless on a mid-storey perch for long periods.
Sallies out briefly to catch large insects before returning to the same perch, and — like most trogons — is often easier to find by call than by active searching through foliage.
