A striking kingfisher with a black cap, white collar, purplish-blue back and bright red bill, favouring coastal habitats, mangroves and tidal rivers where it hunts from low perches.
Feeds on fish, crabs and large insects taken with a swift plunge dive, and is classed as globally Vulnerable owing to declines linked to loss of coastal and wetland habitat across its range.
