A chunky, dark chestnut heron with a black crown and heavily streaked neck, more often heard as a deep booming call at dusk than seen in daylight.
Forages alone on the forest floor and along shaded streams, probing leaf litter for earthworms and invertebrates, and is a scarce but resident forest bird in Borneo.
