A stocky, short-billed tern that behaves more like a gull, often hawking insects over land rather than diving for fish, seen along Bornean coasts and wetlands as an uncommon visitor.
Feeds by snatching prey in flight or picking it from the ground or mud surface, taking a broader diet of crabs, insects and small vertebrates than most other terns.
