A slaty grey laughing-thrush with a rufous crown and bold white eye-ring, moving in noisy, sociable flocks through the mid-storey of hill forest.
Now Near-threatened as montane and hill forest habitat is cleared across its range, though it remains locally common where forest cover persists, its raucous chattering calls carrying far through the canopy.
