A compact, dark falcon with a rufous head, throat and underparts contrasting with slate-grey upperparts, often seen making fast dashes after prey around forest edges and clearings.
Hunts small birds, bats and large insects in swift aerial pursuit, sometimes hawking at dusk, and is a scarce but widespread resident across Borneo's forested lowlands and hills.
