A tiny montane squirrel named after the naturalist John Whitehead, closely related to the lowland least pygmy squirrel but replacing it at higher elevations on mountains such as Kinabalu and Trus Madi. Small ear-tufts give it the alternative name 'tufted pygmy squirrel'.
Diurnal, moving in quick bursts over tree trunks and feeding mainly on bark, lichen and small amounts of fruit. Its size and quick movements make it easy to overlook against tree bark.
