A jewel-like pitta with a deep crimson crown and underparts set against a glossy blue-black back, foraging on the forest floor where its bright colours are surprisingly hard to spot in dappled shade.
Hops through leaf litter turning over debris for insects and worms, and like most pittas is far more often heard than seen, its short whistled call carrying through dense lowland forest.
