A stocky coastal heron occurring in both a dark slate-grey morph and a white morph, closely tied to rocky shorelines and reef flats rather than freshwater wetlands.
Forages by walking slowly over exposed reef and rock at low tide, picking off crabs and small fish, and is a familiar sight along Borneo's rockier coasts.
