A striking woodpecker with a golden-yellow back, black-and-white barred wings and a red crest in males, adaptable enough to persist in disturbed and edge habitats.
Feeds by hitching up trunks and larger limbs, hammering for ants and beetle larvae, and remains one of the more frequently encountered woodpeckers across Bornean lowlands.
