A smooth, cylindrical burrowing snake with a striking red-and-black banded underside on the tail, flattened and raised in a defensive bluff display that mimics a more dangerous coral snake when threatened.
Non-venomous, spending most of its time underground or in leaf litter, feeding on other snakes, eels and small vertebrates, and only rarely seen above ground.
