A large flame-backed woodpecker with a golden back, pale eye and a bold black moustachial stripe, males topped with a full red crest, favouring taller forest than its smaller relative.
Excavates and probes larger trunks and dead limbs for ants and wood-boring beetle larvae, often announcing its presence with a loud, sharp call before drumming.
