A widespread Palearctic gull that loses its dark hood outside the breeding season, appearing in Bornean coastal waters as an uncommon winter visitor among wintering wader and tern flocks.
Feeds opportunistically on fish, invertebrates and scraps, often following boats or foraging along tidelines, and readily mixes with other gulls and terns where it occurs.
