A tiny, jewel-like kingfisher very similar to the Oriental dwarf kingfisher, but with rufous rather than violet-blue upperparts — the two are often treated as forming a species pair and can occur alongside one another in the same lowland forest.
Hunts insects, small lizards and other invertebrates from a low, still perch near forest streams, darting out in a rapid strike before returning to the same spot.
