A smaller relative of the greater coucal, with streaked buffy-brown non-breeding plumage and glossy black breeding plumage, found in grassland and scrub rather than forest.
Forages on the ground and in low vegetation for insects and small vertebrates, generally more associated with open, grassy habitat than the greater coucal.
