A nightjar of open, sparsely vegetated country such as scrub, airstrips and coastal flats, sandy-brown and heavily mottled to blend into bare ground.
Males give a distinctive sharp, rising 'chweek' call at dusk while displaying over open terrain, often the easiest clue to this well-camouflaged bird's presence.
