An unusually plain barbet for the family, with mostly brown plumage lacking the bright facial patterns typical of most Southeast Asian barbets, and a notably social habit.
Highly social, moving in noisy flocks through the mid-canopy foraging for fruit and large insects, quite different from the more solitary habits of colourful barbet species.
