A pale, streaky-headed shearwater with a scaly upperwing pattern, easily picked out among flocks of seabirds by its whitish face and dark eye patch.
Now considered Near-threatened owing to declines at its northern breeding colonies, though non-breeding birds still range south through the South China Sea and can appear off Borneo.
