A small, stocky heron with a dark grey-green back, pale underparts and a short neck, found along riverbanks, mangroves and mudflats.
Hunts by standing motionless at the water's edge or on overhanging branches, striking quickly at small fish and invertebrates. Common and widespread along the Kinabatangan.
