A small, secretive heron relative with buffy-yellow plumage, found in reedbeds, marshes and rice paddy margins, where it is easily overlooked despite being fairly common.
Forages quietly for small fish and invertebrates among dense waterside vegetation, freezing with bill pointed skyward when alarmed to blend with reed stems.
