Banteng

A large wild cattle species, with males typically dark blackish-brown to chestnut and females and young a lighter reddish-brown, both sexes carrying a distinctive white 'stocking' marking on the lower legs and a pale rump patch.

Grazes and browses in open glades, forest edge and secondary growth, generally in small herds. Endangered, and one of the rarer large mammals on a Sabah itinerary — Maliau Basin and Trusan Sugut are among the better-known sites for the species.
