Very similar to the Chinese Pond Heron, with streaky brown breeding plumage and largely white wings visible only in flight, best told apart by breeding-season head and neck colour.
Occurs in Borneo's lowland wetlands and paddies, often alongside other pond herons, foraging patiently for small fish and invertebrates in shallow water.
