A mostly black hornbill with a pale bill and, in males, white outer tail feathers, one of the smaller hornbill species found in Sabah's lowland forest.
Feeds on fruit and small animals in the canopy, generally in pairs or small groups, and is a regularly recorded species on Kinabatangan and Danum Valley canopy walks.
