A dark brown tern relative with a pale grey cap, breeding on remote tropical islands and reefs and occurring around Bornean waters mainly as a non-breeding visitor to offshore reefs and shoals.
Feeds by dipping to the surface for small fish driven up by predatory fish beneath, often gathering in loose flocks over feeding schools alongside other terns and noddies.
