An elegant, slender duck, breeding males with a chocolate head, white neck stripe and long, pointed tail feathers that give the species its name.
One of the most widespread Northern Hemisphere ducks, it is only a rare and accidental winter vagrant to Borneo, at the southern edge of its wintering movements.
