Helmeted Hornbill

A large hornbill with a unique solid casque (unlike the hollow casques of other hornbills) made of dense keratin, historically carved as 'hornbill ivory' — a trade that has driven the species to Critically Endangered status through severe poaching pressure.

Feeds heavily on figs and gives one of the most distinctive calls in Bornean forest: a series of loud hoots accelerating into maniacal laughter, produced by males duelling head-to-head, casque against casque, in aerial jousts over territory.
