A heavily armoured, toothless mammal covered in overlapping keratin scales, with a long, sticky tongue used to extract ants and termites from nests. When threatened, it curls tightly into a ball, scales outermost, as its primary defence.
Solitary and mainly nocturnal, spending time both on the ground and climbing, aided by a strong prehensile tail. Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked mammal group in the world for the illegal wildlife trade, and sightings in the wild are now rare anywhere in Southeast Asia.
